Happy (unofficial) National Tequila Day! – July 24th

According to Mexico government, the Official National Tequila Day is celebrated the third Saturday of March. However years ago, an unofficial, but very convenient, National Tequila Day on July 24th became popular around the globe… and we say convenient because it gives us an excuse to celebrate this important day twice a year!

Having clarified this, let’s continue with the important matter: Tequila!

Born of the blue agave plant, which only grows in the area surrounding the city of Tequila in Jalisco, it is known as “the spirit of Mexico”.  It was first produced in the 16th century prior to the arrival of the Spanish, in 1521. The Aztecs had made a fermented beverage from the agave plant, which they called octli (now known as pulque). When the Spanish conquistadors arrived, and subsequently ran out of their own brandy, they began to distill agave which resulted in the creation of the first indigenous distilled spirit in North America.

Nowadays, Tequila is responsible for some of our favorite drinks, and this time we are sharing the best Tequila Cocktails to try when in Punta Mita.

MitaRita

Find it at Pacífico Beach Club

An original cocktail recipe that perfectly captures the essence of Mexico on a glass. MitaRita is a unique combination of fruity and spicy flavors that combined create a colorful and delightful drink.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Tequila Patron Reposado
  • 1 oz soursop pulp
  • 1 onza mango pulp
  • 1/3 oz lemon juice
  • ½ oz agave syrup
  • Dried Chile de árbol
  • Togarashi salt
  • “Lily” Eatible flower

Directions

Pour tequila, the Tequila, mango and soursop pulp, lemon juice and agave syrup in the shaker, add ice and shake evenly for 10 seconds. Prepare a glass with ice and frost it with the togarashi salt.

Serve the drink and decorate it with the dried chile de arbol and the “Lily” flower.

Kupurita

Inspired by the nice breeze that blow on the Kupuri Beach Club, the Kupurita has become one of the favorite drinks for guests and residents. Its crisp flavor is refreshing, ideal to enjoy during a beach day.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Tequila Patron Silver
  • 1 oz Citronge Orange liqueur
  • ½ oz peach liqueur
  • 1 oz tea syrup*
  • smoked salt**
  • lemon slice

Directions

In a mixing shaker add Tequila, citronge orange liqueur, peach licqueur, tea syrup and lemon juice, shake vigorously and strain into a rocks glass filled with ice frosted with the smoked salt and decorate with the lemon slice.

*For the smoked salt: burn a corn tortilla until is completely black, grind it until it becomes a fine dust and mix it with salt.

**Jarabe de te: prepare a black tea infusion, add 4 spoons of sugar, let it reduce to half over low heat, let it cool.

Mita Mary

  • Tequila Blanco
  • tomato juice
  • vegetables juice
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • salt
  • red pepper
  • lemon juice

Directions

Salt the rim of a tall glass and fill the glass with ice cubes. In a cocktail mixer full of ice, combine the Tequila, vegetable juice, tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Shake vigorously and strain into the glass. Garnish with a stalk of celery.

El Diablito

Find it at Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita

Created by Miguel Aquino, El Diablito is the most popular drink at the recently inaugurated restaurant Dos Catrinas at the Four Seasons Resort, known already for their hand-crafted delicious cocktails made tableside.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Tequila Clase Azul Blanco
  • 3/4 oz Créme de Cassis
  • 1 spoon blackberry jam
  • 3/4 oz  lemon juice
  • 1 oz Lechuguilla

Directions

Fill a shaker with ice, add all the ingredients and shake vigorously, strain and serve into an Old Fashion glass and finish with ginger beer.
