Lets Go Fly (in) a Kite!

Lots going on in the Riviera Nayarit these days! The 2nd annual Festival de Viento or Wind Festival takes place from Friday, May 20th through Sunday, May 22nd in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle Marina Nayarit and on the beaches of Bucerias–both renowned as some of the best places in Mexico for windsurfing and kite surfing.

The race starts Saturday in the Marina Nayarit in La Cruz; it is a straight line for (5km) towards the beach in Bucerías. Sunday is a long distance race starting from Bucerías towards La Cruz and back to Bucerías in a straight line for (10km).

Over 100 competitors from throughout Mexico are expected to participate in the following categories: Open Class (intermediate), National (advanced tricks) and Women. Three judges will be looking for style, difficulty, height and kite position in this dynamic sport competition.

Registration and a welcome cocktail kicks off the event on Friday from 7 -10pm, at Summit in Bucerías, Calle Agustin Melgar at the corner of Lázaro Cárdenas.

On Saturday there is a Captain`s Meeting at the Marina Riviera Nayarit at 10:30 am and Mexican Flag Ceremony by the Marines 12:00 pm. The Downwind Race (Windsurf and Kite) starts at 2:00 pm with Kite Freestyle preliminary rounds at Summit, Bucerías Open Class, National and Women’s. To top it all off at 10:00 pm on Saturday, there will be a party at de Santos in Plaza Peninsula in Puerto Vallarta.

On Sunday May 22 there is a Captain`s Meeting at Summit starting at 12:30 and at 1:00 the Kite Freestyle Finals, Summit, Bucerías Open Class, National and Women’s and at 1:30 pm Long Distance Race (Kite and Windsurf) competitions will be held.

Categories include: Twin Tip, Race, Windsurf and Overall Champion Bucerías – La Cruz. The awards ceremony starts at 6 pm in Bucerias.

Check out those moves and the colorful kites filling the beach! This is definitely worth the trip from Punta Mita whether as a participant or a spectator.

Cost with payment in advance is $450 pesos for Freestyle and Carreras, $550 on the day of the event. $250 pesos for Carreras, Kite and Wind or $350 on the day of the event.
