Nawua brings the wine to Punta Mita

Meet Melanie Ofenloch,
LivePuntaMita‘s wine expert. We asked Melanie to be a regular contributor after enjoying more than a few excellent bottles with her in Punta Mita — not at the same sitting, of course. She is the author of the popular blog, DallasWineChick. Melanie, a marketing communications professional and parttime resident in Punta Mita, defines her basic philosophy as, “no wine snobs allowed”.  She has a passion for discovering wines, drinking wines, and sharing those experiences with others. We are looking forward to sharing a few glasses together…

Punta Mita embodies paradise, perfection and peace. For me, it is always a magical place in almost every sense. Family…Check…Food…Check…Fantastic folks that made me feel welcome…Check…Four Seasons amenities…Check, check…Friends…check, check, check. It truly is my paradise in every sense of the word except for one thing – finding a good glass of wine that wouldn’t cost me the price of a bottle anywhere else.

To make up for this, I bring my own and find that I made a lot of local friends in the process. From the United States, you are allowed to bring four 750L bottles per person which can be checked as part of your luggage. For this, I would recommend purchasing a wine shipper and note that your airline may have luggage charges associated with bringing wine.

That was then. Nawua, at the Four Seasons Resort, is now. Nawua means “house of wine” in local Huichol dialect. Think Dean and Deluca meets Mexico. With a wine selection of over 28 wines – from California, Argentina, Mexico and Italy – which can be viewed in English and Spanish in a high tech fashion on an iPad, you will find a variety of reasonably priced and high-end selections.

I saw a variety of “off the beaten path” and well-known brands. There currently is no wine by the glass bar, which I would love to see. But for now, grab the fresh bread, pastries, cheese, candy and other Mexican products and you have party supplies for hotel guests or for your home, if you are lucky enough to live there.

Nawua is located at The Boutiques at Punta Mita, off the main lobby of the Four Seasons Resort and is open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tel. 329.291.6000, ext. 3116.
