Off the Beaten Path in Punta de Mita

The Live Punta Mita team ventured out to Litibu to a local restaurant called El Mirador which translates in English to viewing place and what a view it has of the Punta de Mita peninsula incorporating ocean and bay vistas along with views towards the Sierra Madre. We arrived just before sunset to be greeted by owner Auton and his family along with guests who were seated around an open-air fire pit and  were immediately given a proud tour of the organic gardens he has recently planted for the restaurant. Felt a bit like Alice Waters and Chez Panisse had arrived to Mexico in the simplest of ways. White corn, fresh herbs, radishes and lettuces among others were to be found in his garden. We were ushered into the palapa for dining and were told about the fresh menu of the day which ranged from locally caught giant shrimp prepared to your liking, chicken in a homemade green mole sauce and mesquite gilled flank steak all served with fresh garden vegetables. The wine selection was unassuming but quite sufficient and we had a lovely Spanish  Tempranillo as we watched the sunset over the peninsula.  Auton arrived with a molcajete of freshly made salsa and bean quesadillas and spoke with us about his noble intentions for the restaurant: serving traditional local cuisine, adding on a terrace, growing all of his own vegetables which will also be for sale once his crops are sufficient along with organic coffee, salsas and ice cream.  He also stated that he knows this will take him some time but that he is a patient and persistent man and is willing to even provide transportation for people although it is quite easily accessible just off the road toward Sayulita on the left at km. 1.

The sunset and the mountain breeze came through the hills as we dined and we watched the sky light up and the stars come out. Delicious in all ways. For dessert El Mirador has organic ice cream with flavors such as coconut, coffee and another from agave syrup.  The very well made organic coffee we had took off the chill, as did the tequila!

El Mirador is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 10 am – 9 pm Tel 329.298.4214 or cell 322.160.7636 / 322.1010248.
