Polo in the Pueblo: Saturday evenings at La Patrona, San Pancho

article-image

Each Saturday from November through June, the nearby pueblo (town) of San Pancho is the site of a weekly polo match, at the La Patrona Polo Club. It’s the favored way to spend a Saturday evening – an eclectic setting with a generally colorful gathering. The polo club itself is very attractive, with white-draped tables bordering the field, and tiers of comfortable seating. Mountains rise up in the background while crowing roosters – and the outdoor “disco” across the street – offer an unlikely soundtrack for a match generally referred to as “the sport of Kings”.

The matches start at 5pm, and it’s advisable to get there on time, or early, for the best seats at the tables, directly adjacent to the field – you can’t have a more up-close-and personal view of the polo match in front of you. The horses are well cared for and the competition fierce but gentlemanly. (Among the top players for Club Patrona is its owner, one of the top female players in Mexico). The Club has an excellent restaurant with a new chef from Mexico City, and offers a full dinner option (required, for table seating), or you can opt to simply enjoy cocktails at the bar or in the lounge seating areas.

Generally two matches are played, with an intermission between them. The field is smaller than regulation, but there is an expanded field under construction, expected to open soon. And, following the polo playing, there is always entertainment that follows—which have included everything from sexy Spanish guitarists to mariachis, to dramatic flamenco dancers. Combined, it’s a winning way to spend a Saturday evening, and always attracts a stellar crowd.

To get there, take a taxi…the road between Costa Banderas and San Pancho is not lit, can be busy with traffic at night, and you’ll be happy to have a seasoned driver – especially on the way home, and even more so if you’ve imbibed. The town is small, and most anyone in it can direct you to La Patrona, or the polo field. At the conclusion of the evening, La Patrona can easily arrange taxis to bring you back. Polo Club La Patrona is located at: Ceilan 10, Col. Centro, San Pancho, Nayarit.

Matches are played on thursdays and Saturdays, beginning at 5pm, with entertainment following. A minimum consumption charge of $250 pesos applies on Saturdays.
