After a successful first year, the YCI Program (Youth Career Initiative) is back for a second round. Starting on September 23rd, young community members between 17 and 24 will benefit or this three months program where they’ll learn invaluable skills from every hotel department, creating career opportunities and providing a work experience for those who have had trouble finishing school and also finding a job.

The original YCI program started in Bangkok as the Youth Career Development Program, a community initiative from Pan Pacific Hotels Group established to “give something back”. Lyndall DeMarco, Corporate Director of Education with Pan Pacific, and Dr. Kitiya Phornsadja, Child Protection Officer for UNICEF Thailand were the pioneers behind the program model, which saw eight girls and one boy from welfare schools in Northern Thailand transform their lives as a result of the program. It was so successful for both the students and the hotel that it was expanded to allow more young people and hotel companies to participate in Bangkok.
YCI arrived to Bahia de Banderas when Marriot International adopted the program and started to invite several resorts. Then W Hotel and Th St. Regis Punta Mita Resort decided to get PEACE involved to help promote the program and reach the community taking advantage of their outstanding knowledge of the community members, and trusted them on the suggestion of possible candidates for the selection.

Last year was the first year the program was in place under the supervision of Miriam Marín, PEACE Community Pride leader. The selected candidates received valuable work experience training at the hotels, as well as financial and medical benefits, and the most important, 70% of the students who attended were placed in full-time positions.

PEACE’S assistance is without a doubt intrinsic to the program’s success and will continue to be the point of contact between the community and the resorts.

Congratulations for this amazing initiative and good luck for the new participants!
