Celebrating the wonders of Mexico! – Margaritas


LivePuntaMita is here to celebrate one of our favorite things about Mexico: Margaritas! They are refreshing and delicious and while many think they are the ideal summer cocktail, the good news is that they are perfect all year round while in Punta Mita!

Margarita is a tequila-based cocktail that can be reinvented in many ways to fit basically every taste, and it is super easy to prepare from scratch.

Sharing with you here the basic Margarita Recipe, together with some tips to personalize your margaritas, and make your own creations.

Basic Ingredients for an original Margarita on the rocks

  • 1 1/2 ounces tequila
  • 1/2 ounce triple sec (Cointreau is recommended)
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • Lime wedge for garnish
  • Salt or sugar to rim the glass (optional)


  1. If desired, salt the rim of a chilled margarita glass.
  2. Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
  3. Shake well.
  4. Strain into the prepared glass with or without fresh ice.
  5. Garnish with the lime wedge.

Tips for a Twist

  • Pour all of the ingredients into a blender instead of a cocktail shaker to get a Frozen Margarita.
  • Avoid concentrate or cheap tequila. The best tequila for Margaritas should be a silver/blanco, as the natural agave flavor and the true tequila taste are those of the un-aged spirit.
  • Regular salt is fine, but you may add a spicy twist adding a little bit of chili powder or Tajin to the mix used to salt the rim of your glass.
  • Make it boozier by using Cointreau instead of Triple Sec. It has a higher alcohol content and results in a very slow-sipping drink.
  • Add fresh fruit. Lime or lemon slices are always good, of course. But sliced strawberry or blueberries popped in are a new twist.
