Descúbrete, a PEACE Punta de Mita program enriching the lives of local women and youths

By Posted on 0

PEACE Punta de Mita is a well known organization in the area. Founded back in 2013 by a small group of Punta de Mita area homeowners who, as seasonal residents, recognized the need to help to improve the social needs of the three Punta de Mita area villages. Over the years, new residents have joined this non profit, contributing with generous donations and valuable participation on PEACE programs and operations.

One of the many programs that PEACE has put in place is Descúbrete (Discover yourself in English), a personal growth counseling program that seeks to enrich the lives of local women, youths and in the near future men, via a cohesive program focused on self-discovery, self-reliance and empowerment.

The main goal is to help them gain insight into what is driving them, their motivations, their skills and abilities, strengths and weaknesses, and the patterns of behavior that keep them from achieving their potential. By understanding themselves, they find out what they really want, what is preventing them from having it, and how to overcome obstacles. This powerful program has been implemented around the world with much success.

When this program was originally stablished in the Punta Mita area, it was targeted at women who would meet in groups guided by facilitators, to share their experiences, assess their skills and personal attributes and generally help and encourage each other on their paths toward personal growth and more satisfying lives for themselves, their families and their communities. This initial stage was so successful that after one year, it was expanded to include youths aged 13 to 19.

For each Descúbrete session a group of trained and experienced counselors and psychologists facilitate the workshops, and the 2017 edition of this program is about to begin which promises to be another wonderful series of self-discovery and empowerment for the local community.

We invite you to learn more about this program and the rest of the activities that PEACE Punta de Mita develops, and why not, to support them, we all can contribute so these wonderful initiatives continue improving the quality of live of the community.

Best of luck on your new journey Ceci Paredes!

We know farewells are sad, but we are certain that every change is a new opportunity to get better and grow. Saying goodbye to Ceci after having her as leader of PEACE Punta Mita isn’t easy at all, but she has laid the foundations for the strong and successful organization that PEACE is today.

Ceci took the role of Executive Director on April 01, 2013 of PEACE Punta de Mita A.C., and her presence was critical to the start-up, it was thanks to her leadership and profound effort that the process of winding up the old Peace, and starting up the new PEACE was such a successful achievement.

Her strong leadership abilities were the driving force behind the successful introduction of the new PEACEstrategy of improving the lives of the local villagers by investing in the next generation, children & youths, focusing principally on education.

Not only overseeing already implemented programs such as Avanza and Computers, Ceci orchestrated new ones, including Campeones, and most notably the English Program which excels by reaching over 1,200 students in the community to improve invaluable second language skills, whilst creating social change. Four years on, Ceci is now closing this chapter of her life with PEACE to seek new challenges.

With the reorganizing of the PEACE team, Ceci will be passing the torch to new Executive Director, Ali Elíasand the team. In addition to this mentoring role, she will also be dedicating herself to some key projects, including an amazing new PEACE Learning Center which will be built on land provided by Dine. We thank Ceci for her determined leadership and profound contribution to start PEACE in difficult times, and to launch it on its path of success.

To wish Ceci farewell, PEACE staff organized a surprise gathering to celebrate her achievements and wish her well on her ventures! Members of the community, including SEPThe St. Regis Punta Mita Resort and Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita staff, along with students and their families, met in the “Casa de la Tercera Edad“  to surprise Ceci. The night was full of great music, traditional dance, and memories, with great food and drink supplied by the hotels and community members.

We wish you nothing but the best Ceci, good luck in your new projects and thank you so much for all your love and devotion for this community.

¡Buena Suerte Ceci!

PEACE Punta de Mita introduces their New Executive Director!

It seems like it was yesterday when Ceci Paredes was taking on the role of Executive Director of PEACE Punta de Mita, but it’s been 4 years already!

Back in 2013, Ceci was critical to the start-up as it was due to her leadership and profound effort that the process of winding up the old Peace, and starting up the new PEACE was such a successful achievement. Her strong leadership abilities were the driving force behind the successful introduction of the new PEACE strategy of improving the lives of the local villagers by investing in the next generation, children & youths, focusing principally on education.

With the reorganizing of the PEACE team, Ceci will be passing the torch to new Executive Director, Ali Elías and the team. Ali Elías, previously PEACE Education Supervisor, obtained her law degree at the University of Tepic, and moved to the Punta de Mita area in 2005. Ali began working with PEACE as a teacher over 8 years ago. Prior to the start-up of the new PEACE, she was a teacher at the PEACE Center and played the key leadership role in the success of the AVANZA program. When the PEACE English Program expanded in April 2015, Ali was promoted to Education Supervisor – responsible for over 80% of the PEACE operating budget, in which her experience and determination greatly contributed to the successful partnership between PEACE and SEP [Secretaria de Educacion Publica].

Following the foundations that Ceci has laid down, Ali will continue to meet PEACE’s mission that aims to influence social change within the local villages, focusing and investing in education for the younger generation. Ali’s enthusiastic child-centered teaching method has inspired and changed the lives of many local children, and her successful method has been adopted by the PEACE teaching staff. She plans to continue growing the solid PEACE relationship with the Punta de Mita local community, and will manage the various PEACE programs and initiatives, overseeing the positive impact on local’s lives.

Ceci will continue working with PEACE but now with a mentoring role, she will also be dedicating herself to some key projects, including an amazing new PEACE Learning Center which will be built on land provided by Dine.

We thank Ceci for all the hard work done for the community in the past years and we wish her nothing but the best in her new project. At the same time, we would like to con congratulate Ali for her new position wishing her a bright future with PEACE, we are sure that she’ll take this amazing organization to the next level.

Marieta Islands' Seabed gets Cleaned Up for World Oceans Day!

By Posted on 0

A cleanup of the seabed took place at the Marieta Islands National Park on Thursday, June 8, 2017 in honor of World Oceans Day.

The different entities that participated in the activity were: the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas (Conanp, by its acronym in Spanish), the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), the Centro Universitario de la Costa, Vallarta Adventures, Mismaloya Adventures and Sayulita Entourage. The Navy was also present to guarantee their safety.

Fourteen scuba divers took action, going below the waves to depths of between five and nine meters along five different areas of Isla Larga and Isla Redonda in order to extricate foreign objects from the place. The trash that was brought up will be donated to the Humpback Whale sculpture that’s being made out of recycled material in San Pancho.

At the end of the day not much was found, which is a testament to the continued application of the norms put in place for visits to the area and to the continual cleanup activities. The investigators from the CUC assured the coral continues to restore itself naturally at a normal pace.

Regarding tourism activity in the area, the organization, tranquility, the respect of the visitor limits and boat times, the scheduling and the daily and hourly programming of the different service providers is very much in evidence. The commitment is there and the actions back it up!

PEACE Punta de Mita: Empowerment through Education by Alexis Velasco

HOY SÍ, 2nd Year, Edition 15, June 2017

For many residents of Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay it could be a surprise that the popular town known as Punta de Mita, is made up of two semi-rural towns: New Corral del Risco and Emiliano Zapata. It is to say that the region is widely known to be a small tourist destination in Riviera Nayarit, yet little is said about the activities of its residents and the work that is done by certain associations to elevate the quality of life of those who make up the population.

Peace Punta de Mita is one of these organizations. Since 2013, its members have worked in educational programs with children, youths and local families, always with the vision of personal empowerment and development.

The creation of this non-profit foundation derived from financial support from foreign donors that reside in the tourist zone, however operations of the center are Mexican. Furthermore, many of them have lived in the communities for various years, making their commitment notable.

Cecilia Paredes, executive director of Peace Punta de Mita, received us at the community center to talk to us in more detail about Peace’s mission. “We are dedicated 100% to granting better lifestyle opportunities to those living in these communities”, she states.

The signature program of the foundation is the teaching of English and is carried out in different educational institutions from basic to higher levels in New Corral del Risco, Emiliano Zapata and Higuera Blanca (another close town that also receives the benefits of the initiative). Through the agreement with the Mexican Ministry of Education (SEP), teachers of Peace Punta de Mita conduct classes without cost to the more than 1,200 students over 10 different schools.

To make this possible, the participation of the directors of each school is important, who have close relationships with the Peace team.

María de Luz Andrate, director of the Federico Froebel Kindergarten in the Emiliano Zapata, highlights that the activity has provided an extracurricular subject, which could not have been given in classes. “In Mexico, there are few public institutions at this level that receive classes like these. Even though this is a preschool education level, our students already manage to achieve sentences and they feel motivated. The parents also very happy”, she says.

Another of the succeful programs of Peace Punta de Mita is the “Campeones”, in which the youths with high grades from secondary schools receive regular classes to improve their computer abilities (as a tool for learning) and to perfect their English. Likewise, to receive assistance generating a project that will be implemented in their community.

The first generation of youths that received this benefit managed the fundraising and creation for a bus stop for their community, while the second generation refurbished the installations of the kinder in Higuera Blanca.

Another support that several of the students with high levels in “Campeones” receive is the scholarship to study in Colegio Bucerias, one the best options in the Banderas Bay to continue bilingual studies and leadership.

“Over the years at Peace Punta de Mita, I have fortunately noticed an increase in youths loving their country and many want to contribute to the community”, mentioned Cecilia Paredes.

Furthermore, Peace Punta de Mita has a computer laboratory available for the entire community, where they conduct informative classes to secondary school students. Many students and youths utilize this area to conduct their homework also.

Personal development is also an area of importance for the association through the “Descúbrete” program, which offers youths and women to understand themselves and improve their self-esteem, giving confidence and forming healthy relationships in the community. Alejandra Ponce, director of Los Niños Héroes de Chapultepec (located in Emiliano Zapata) comments: “It is a great option for the youths to understand their emotions and learn how to make good decisions in certain moments of their lives. I myself have participated in the programs sessions and I too have rediscovered many aspects of myself.”

For the communities of Emiliano Zapata, New Corral del Risco and Higuera Blanca; the work done by the group of professionals at Peace Punta de Mita is invaluable and this is noted in the way that adults and children greet one another on the streets. At the same time as their educational focus, the organization also promotes values such as respect, commitment, self-worth and caring for the community.

Upon learning about the work from this kind of organization we would like to assist them yet do not know which way is best. It is thought that the best and most important way to support the foundation is financially with donations. However, Peace Punta de Mita invites everyone that would like to share successful stories about Peace or the community to contact us on through our website, social media or by telephone on (329)291-5157.

Additionally, the institution believes that to empower the local people, to live with them and listen to their testimonies is fundamental as it represents a fountain of inspiration

“Although at times we doubt, we all have moments of success. We are all winners in some way and we like to listen to those accounts”, finalized Cecilia Paredes, executive director of Peace Punta de Mita.
